Connecting Academic Learning with Industry Practice
The IIBA South Africa Chapter's Western Cape team recently had the opportunity to engage with final-year Information Systems students at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where they shared insights into the dynamic world of Business Analysis and the many career opportunities available within the profession.
Hosted by the Department of Information Systems, the session formed part of the INF3012S programme and aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice. Students gained valuable exposure to the role of the Business Analyst, professional development pathways, and the importance of business analysis in driving organisational success.
Exploring the Profession of Business Analysis
The session followed a lecture on business process mining presented by Prof Lisa Seymour and provided students with a practical industry perspective on how business analysis is applied in real-world environments.
Key topics covered included:
- An introduction to the Business Analysis profession and its role within organisations
- A day in the life of a Business Analyst
- An overview of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA)
- The role and impact of the IIBA South Africa Chapter
- Professional certification pathways available through IIBA
- Specialised certifications for career growth and continuous professional development
Drawing from their combined experience across IT consulting, e-commerce, product ownership, software development, digital transformation, retail operations, and business process analysis, the presenters shared practical examples that helped students connect classroom concepts to workplace realities.
Key Insights Shared with Students
Business Analysis Creates the Link Between Business and Technology
Students were introduced to Business Analysis as a discipline that goes beyond gathering requirements. Business Analysts help organisations understand challenges, identify opportunities, and shape solutions that deliver meaningful business value.
Diverse Career Opportunities Exist
The presenters demonstrated how the skills developed through an Information Systems qualification can open doors to a variety of career paths, including business analysis, product ownership, consulting, digital transformation, and process improvement.
Understanding Processes Comes Before Solutions
Building on the business process mining lecture, students were encouraged to first understand how work is performed, where inefficiencies exist, and what outcomes are required before proposing changes or technology solutions.
Learning Doesn't Stop at Graduation
The session highlighted the importance of continuous professional development and introduced students to IIBA's globally recognised certification pathways, designed to support career progression at every stage.
Professional Communities Matter
Students learned about the value of participating in professional communities such as IIBA, where they can build networks, gain industry insights, and learn from experienced practitioners.
Practical Experience Starts Now
The presenters encouraged students to begin developing workplace-ready skills by strengthening their analytical thinking, communication, stakeholder engagement, and process documentation capabilities while still studying.
About IIBA South Africa
The session also introduced students to the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) and the role of the IIBA South Africa Chapter in advancing the profession locally.
The chapter's vision is to be "the home of business analysis in Southern Africa," supported by a mission to lead the South African business analysis community and professional standards so that every person achieves more.
Guided by the values of service, collaboration, integrity, and kindness, the chapter continues to create opportunities for learning, networking, professional growth, and community building across the country.
Building the Next Generation of Business Analysts
The engagement provided students with meaningful exposure to the business analysis profession and demonstrated how an Information Systems degree can serve as a foundation for a wide range of rewarding careers.
By connecting students directly with industry practitioners and the broader professional community, the session helped illustrate how business analysis combines business understanding, technology, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving to create real organisational impact.
The IIBA South Africa Western Cape team looks forward to continuing its collaboration with academic institutions and supporting the development of future business analysis professionals across South Africa.
